Yankee Candle was founded in December 1969 by 16 year old Michael Kittredge. While considering options for his Mother's Christmas gift, inspiration struck. He gathered his crayons and found an empty milk carton. He melted his crayons in a pot on the kitchen cooker, poured the hot liquid into the carton and added a wick "borrowed" from a candle in his dining room. The broken bits of wax from that damaged dinner candle went into the milk carton as well. A few hours later, Michael’s first candle sat proudly on the kitchen table.

A neighbour admired it and asked Michael, (to his astonishment), if he’d sell it to her. He did for $1.36, and instantly spent his profits on a box of proper paraffin at the local grocer's. Armed with provisions, he made two more milk-carton candles, sold one and gave one to his Mother for Christmas. Again he reinvested his profits in more wax and Yankee Candle was born. And to think, it all started with a gift for Michael’s Mother!
