Caring for Keratosis Pilaris with CeraVe

What is Keratosis Pilaris

Have you ever noticed rough and bumpy skin on your upper arms, thighs, buttocks or face? Don't worry you are not alone! Keratosis Pilaris also known as Chicken Skin affects so many people, it is a harmless and common skin condition.

Most of the cases of Keratosis Pilaris are thought to be genetic, so you may have noticed other family members with a similar condition, although it can vary in degrees. External factors such as weather particularly low humidity and hormonal shifts during adolescence can also have an effect on it. Scientists believe the small red bumps and rough patches on the surface of the skin are caused by an overproduction of keratin and a build-up of dead skin cells.

How can you improve you skin texture?

By using a cleanser that exfoliates and increases cell turnover, such as the SA Smoothing Cleanser it can help tackle the build-up of Keratin on the surface of the skin. This lightly foaming gel gently smooths and exfoliates dry, rough and bumpy skin. It helps protect the skin's moisture barrier with three essential ceramides (1, 3 and 6-II) and smoothes with the liquid exfoliant salicylic acid. It also contains the powerful hydrating humectant hyaluronic acid which works by attracting and retaining moisture to keep skin healthy.

After cleaning your skin, its important to lock in hydration with a body moisturiser such as CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream. This gentle cream is contains urea to retain moisture, and salicylic acid to exfoliate and smooth rough, bumpy skin. This moisturising cream is formulated with three essential ceramides and uses MultiVesicular Emulsion Technology (MVE) to release hydrating ingredients, layer by layer, for up to 24 hours. Your skin will look and feel improved in as little as 3 days.

Although there is not yet a cure for Keratosis Pilaris, it can be effectively managed with regular exfoliation and cleansing. To help ease redness, try showering in warm rather than hot water as it can dry out and make the condition worse. At home and in work having the central heating on a lower temperature and using humidifiers can also help.

It is important to remember that Keratosis Pilaris can’t be scrubbed away with physical exfoliants or cleansing tools, this will only irritate and damage the skin. Using cleansers and liquid exfoliants and essential ceramides is the best way to treat it.
