New Year, New Hair! Five Hair Trends to Consider in 2021

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been like the least fun, most catastrophic version of The Floor Is Lava that any of us could have imagined. Although times seem tough, a new year has dawned on us, and with it comes with a new trend. For better or worse, it’s time to welcome back the nostalgic nineties!

We’ve seen a real resurgence in ‘90’s style, with nods to “The Rachael” via Selena Gomez, and subtle layers gently bucking the current blunt bob into a face framing delight. Layers are wonderful for adding texture and volume to finer hair and help with movement in thick hair by removing weight. Shorter layers will frame the face, and draw focus to desired facial features, such as the cheekbones. Be guided by your stylist as to which type of layering will suit you best and reap the style rewards. Keep layers from looking dated by giving them texture with a matte finish product like Kevin Murphy Bedroom hair. A little bit of this will keep your hair looking relaxed and tousled and will provide medium hold.

Fringes in the 90’s tended to be fine in depth, more in the wispy side, and blunt on the ends, think Baby Spice. However, the trend now also incorporates some gentle face framing, by giving more bespoke shaping and blending to the individual client. A good styling brush is what you will need to care for this style at home. GHD Natural Bristle Brushes sizes 1 and 2 will give you enough control to shape your fringe nicely without damaging hair. Also, using a medium heat hairdryer will allow you more time to give your fringe the desired shape.

The Textured Pixie

This is a trend that comes back time and time again, but the ‘micro fringe’ is what gives it the true 90’s vibe. Halle Berry and Winona Ryder are probably the most perfect example of this style, it is fun and feminine, but easy to care for, providing it is cut regularly. An after styler with a natural finish and medium hold will suit this style perfectly. ELEVEN Matte Texture Styling Paste Micro Bangs. These are not for the faint hearted, but, if they’re good enough for the 90’s Gwen Stefani, then I’m in. Already a throwback to the 50’s, this style saw a resurgence during the ‘grunge’ scene. I love the young, carefree vibe of this style, that automatically gives a more alternative edge to any length or style. Keep them under control with relaxing stylers like Kerastase Elexir.

Natural Texture

This involves minimal styling, so should be a favourite for your WFH look. Whatever the natural inclination of your tresses, just pop in a leave in product and Bob’s your uncle. To attain the best results do very little to your hair, as in don’t handle it too much, and don’t blow-dry. Be sure to deeply hydrate with a great shampoo and conditioner and use some leave-in product, to protect and define your hair. So, whether your hair is straight, wavey, or curly, just embrace it. It will also give your hair some rest from over styling. We have the perfect hydrating bundle for this in the form of the Alfaparf Moisture Bundle.

Textured Bun

A big hit in every era it seems but keeping long face framing tresses at the front will channel serious Clueless vibes. An easy to achieve up-style that will help you stretch an extra day out of unwashed hair. Simply vamp it up with some dry shampoo to disguise excess oil and add matt texture. One of my all-time favourites is Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo.

See, the 90’s weren’t a complete style flop, hair had some big moments in that decade and I for one am happy to welcome them back…well some of them at least!
