Retinol: Your Guide to a Radiant and Youthful Complexion

Unlock Youthful Skin with Retinol

When it comes to skincare superheroes, there is one ingredient in particular that everyone has heard of and is talking about: retinol. Derived from Vitamin A, retinol has earned its reputation as one of the best ingredients for treating a range of skin concerns, from acne to aging. Pam our Senior Skincare Expert talks about all things retinol, exploring its benefits, tips on how and when to use it, and advise on alternatives.

Retinol: A Youthful Elixir

As a vitamin A derivative, retinol is your go-to ingredient for a list of skin concerns. From combating acne to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, it stimulates skin cell development, and exfoliates the skin. Through this exfoliation process, it stimulates collagen production, resulting in smoother, plumper, and more youthful skin.

However, patience is key when it comes to retinol. It may take several weeks of consistent use before you start seeing noticeable improvements in your skin. But trust the process – the results will be worth it!

Retinol: Targeting Various Skin Concerns

  • Fine lines and wrinkles: Boosts collagen production helping to minimise signs of aging.
  • Acne and Problematic skin: It helps to lessen breakouts.
  • Sebum production: Retinol assists in balancing oil production.
  • Exfoliation: It gently sloughs away dead skin cells, leaving your skin looking more radiant.
  • Stimulates Collagen and Elastin production: This leads to plumper, firmer skin.
  • Refines texture and evens skin tone: Skin looks and feels smoother, it helps with photodamage and uneven pigmentation.

Your Retinol Journey: Start Slow

A cautious approach is necessary while starting a retinol journey. Pam recommends beginning with a pea-sized amount 1-2 times a week and then gradually increasing. It is so important you don’t overuse retinol as your skin can respond and become sensitive and dry in areas. If your skin seems not to be climatizing to the retinol, you should buffer it with a moisturiser to dilute it and then gradually reduce the buffer altogether. Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. So visible results may take up to 2-3 months before you notice a difference.

Pregnant or Breastfeeding? Consider Alternatives

Our advice is always to check with your general practitioner (GP). Safer, more natural alternatives like Bakuchiol, provide many of the same benefits of retinol but without the risks.

Cannot Tolerate Retinol Topically? Try Supplements

If your skin cannot tolerate any form of Vitamin A topically then Pam recommends taking it orally. Try the Advanced Nutrition Skin Vit A + which will not only help your skin look healthy but also supports strong muscles and bones.

Create Harmony in Your Routine

Retinol works well with many other skincare ingredients. Ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid can complement its effects. However, avoid combining it with other exfoliators to prevent over-exfoliation. Retinol Golden Rule ALWAYS wear an SPF! At Millies as you know we recommend an SPF every day, especially if using a retinol skincare product. As retinol works by increasing cell turnover your skin may be temporarily thinner or more sensitized.

Where does Retinol Fit in Your Skincare Routine

Introduce retinol gradually to avoid retinoid reactions. Apply it before any other creams or serums to allow for maximum penetration. Always include broad-spectrum SPF, especially if you apply retinol in the morning. You can always add your retinol into a product to dilute it down if you are climatising your skin to it and then eventually remove buffer cream.

Daily Skincare Routine with Retinol

  • AM: Cleanser, toner, retinol, vitamin C and SPF

  • PM: Cleanser, toner, retinol and night cream or serum
