Pharmacist Picks: December Gift Guide

Thoughtful gifts, beauty favourites and little luxuries - handpicked by Lauren O’Reilly, Millie’s in-house pharmacist.

Christmas shopping can be lovely… until you’re staring at a list of names and wondering what on earth to buy everyone. I don’t know about you, but I like to make quick decisions when it comes to gifting and get the job done in one fell swoop! Maybe I just have zero patience. If you enjoy a bit of organisation, like me, everything is categorised by recipient below, and divided into Luxury, Practical and Stocking Filler.

Whether you’re shopping for your mam, your best friend, a teenager who knows far more about skincare than you do, or someone who is genuinely impossible to buy for, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite gift ideas from Millie’s.

From everyday essentials that feel a little more luxurious to beautiful home fragrances, haircare heroes and fun stocking fillers, there’s something for a range of tastes. These are the kinds of gifts people can enjoy long after the Christmas decorations come down.

For Her

For me, the gifts I have chosen ‘For Her’ have the broadest appeal. Whether she loves a proper pamper session, beautiful haircare or a little everyday luxury, these gifts feel special while still being useful.

Luxury: Kérastase Gloss Absolu Duo Holiday Gift Set

For someone who loves a glossy, salon-worthy finish, this is a lovely haircare treat. Kérastase makes everyday haircare feel like an occasion, and a beautifully packaged duo is a great way to introduce someone to a range they might not buy for themselves.  This combines the Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops with the Gloss Absolu Hair Mist (like hair perfume) and is ideal long, frizz-prone hair. It makes your hair smell absolutely divine and gives that added hydration and shine too. I use it whenever I want to feel fancy.

Practical: The Perfect Pair - Millie’s Exclusive Gift Set

A clever pairing of Living Proof Dry Shampoo and Bare by Vogue Dark Tan. Ideal for the person who likes to feel put together without spending hours getting ready. It combines two useful and hugely popular beauty staples in one gift. If the recipient is new to either product – it will likely make its way into their regular beauty routine! I was late to discovering Bare By Vogue Tan earlier this year, and as someone who never would have used tan due to not wanting any tan-like odour or a sticky feeling on the skin – this is a total winner for me! No bad smell, and no stickiness!

Practical Luxury: Millie’s Exclusive Kérastase Genesis Gift Set

A beautiful option for someone who wants to give their haircare routine a little upgrade. The Genesis range is designed for hair prone to falling due to breakage, making it worth considering for someone who is trying to look after fragile hair, and went viral recently, and has grown very popular amongst people with weakened, fragile hair that snaps during brushing, heat styling or everyday handling.

Stocking Filler: L’Occitane Hand Cream Collection

A classic for a reason. Hand cream is particularly welcome during colder weather, when frequent handwashing and chilly conditions can leave hands feeling dry. This would be  an ideal gift for a work-colleague or friend – helping them have little moments of luxury throughout their working day!

For Sensitive Skin: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Gift Set

For someone whose skin is sensitive, reactive or easily irritated, or for someone currently undergoing treatment and having irritated or dry skin related side effects, I love the ultra-gentle Toleriane range. Gentle skincare that supports the skin barrier without overcomplicating the routine is a really a thoughtful gift for someone who struggles to find products their skin can tolerate.

For Mam

For the mother who deserves a proper treat, whether she loves skincare, haircare or a little luxury she might not choose for herself.

Luxury: ELEMIS The Power of Pro-Collagen Complete Skincare Gift Set

The Elemis Pro-Collagen range is such a recognisable ELEMIS favourite, and a complete gift set makes a beautiful present for any mum who loves a luxurious daily skincare routine. The gift that keeps on giving, I say!

Practical: Pureology Pure Volume Gift Set

Who doesn’t love a gift of lovely haircare? There are other versions of this gift set also, depending on hair type and concern, but I always love the Pureology gift sets. They are beautiful products to use, but maybe ones that the mother in our lives isn’t treating themselves to. This particular one is popular because it is a great option for someone who enjoys a little lift and body in their hair.

Stocking Filler: Clarins Lip Comfort Oil Mini Collection

A lovely little luxury for someone who enjoys a lip product with a glossy finish, and ultra-hydrating. I ordinarily use the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Lip Balm but when I want a little more luxury, this is my favourite. The mini collection offers variety and is a great option for a handbag, a travel bag or simply trying different shades.

For Him

For dads, partners, brothers and friends who appreciate a good fragrance or a quality body-care routine.

Luxury: Issey Miyake Le Sel d’Issey Eau de Toilette 100ml Gift Set

A distinctive fragrance gift for someone who enjoys something a little different. The Le Sel d’Issey name evokes a fresh, mineral-inspired scent, making it a great option for someone who likes modern fragrances.

Practical: Molton Brown Woody Fresh Body Care Collection

A polished body-care gift for someone who appreciates quality toiletries. Molton Brown brings a more luxurious feel to the everyday shower routine, so this is a good option for someone who enjoys the finer details.

Another Gift Option: Rituals Homme Medium Gift Set

I love this gift set. The shampoo contains caffeine, which more and more men are interested in incorporating into their haircare routine now. I love how this is presented, in a luxurious velvety box, with a mini fragrance for on-the-go, a beautiful shower foam, and a mild facial cleanser.

Stocking Filler: Molton Brown Recharge Black Pepper Bath & Shower

A smaller gift that still feels considered. The Black Pepper range is a good option for someone who prefers a bold, woody fragrance profile and wants their everyday shower routine to feel a bit more elevated.

For the Teenager

Teenagers can be tricky to buy for, especially when trends and favourite products change at lightning speed. These options cover hair, fragrance, beauty and skincare without making the gift feel too predictable.

Luxury: The Belle Brush Backstage Edit

A great choice for someone who loves doing their hair and enjoys having the right tools and accessories to create different looks. It feels like a treat for the teenager who takes pride in getting ready, and is a beautiful Guaranteed Irish brand to buy from.

Practical: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Anti-Blemish Gift Set

A really great useful option for a teenager with oily or blemish-prone skin. The Effaclar range offers targeted skincare for people dealing with breakouts and excess oil, and this is a great starter set.

Stocking Filler: KASH Beauty Lip Stain & Shine Gift Set

I don’t think this is limited to teens but it is such a lovely beauty gift for someone who enjoys experimenting with lip products. It’s small enough for a stocking but still feels like a proper present. The lip stains last all day and the gloss can be reapplied as needed for an always fresh lip look.

For the Teen Boy

Skincare, fragrance and haircare can all make good gifts for teen boys, particularly if they are starting to take an interest in their routine.

Fragrance: Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Eau de Toilette & Body Wash

A lovely introductory fragrance-and-body-care combination in the classic Tommy scent.

For the Haircare Enthusiast: Millie’s Exclusive Scalp Discovery Collection

A useful option for a teenager who is interested in haircare and scalp health. It gives them a chance to explore a more considered and targeted routine, particularly if they struggle with dry, sensitive or irritated scalp. Looking after scalp health is looking after hair health. Gone are the days of attacking an irritated scalp with an overly harsh tripping shampoo. Time to care for the scalp, wash it as frequently as is needed, and with the right products.

For the Skincare-Obsessed Teen: Millie’s Exclusive Medicube Bestsellers Collection

For the teenager who is already interested in skincare trends and likes trying new products. My advice is to keep the routine sensible: a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and daily sun protection are the foundations, and then these Medicube Bestsellers are gentle enough to use on teen skin, and are a lovely way to extend a skincare routine into masks and gentle toner pads.

For Your Best Friend

Sometimes you want a gift that feels a little more personal than the usual candle or box of chocolates!

Ground Gra Mna Gift Set

The message on this gift alone is so beautiful – “Celebrate mother nature and the enduring power and strength of all women”, but of course the products are also gorgeous. This is such a lovely option for a friend who appreciates thoughtful gifts and a bit of everyday indulgence, with a night body balm and sleep pillow spray, this is a beautiful nod towards a nightly self-care ritual.

For the Homebody

For someone who loves a cosy evening, a beautifully scented home or the little rituals that make staying in feel special. Extra special if buying for someone who has recently moved into a new home!

Ground Hand Care Ritual Gift Set

A practical gift with a pampering feel. Hand care is useful all year round, but particularly during winter, when hands can become dry and uncomfortable. I love the scent of these, and having these in your bathroom makes it feel like you are in a spa. Divine!

NEOM Perfect Peace

An Irish brand and a beautiful option for someone who loves creating a calm atmosphere at home. I am very scent-fussy when it comes to candles, and this is my favourite in the Neom range. Not overpowering, and anyone who smells the fragrance, loves it. It’s also not just a fragrance for the festive period – so its use can live on beyond December!

La Bougie Honeysuckle & Sea Salt Candle

Another lovely Irish option for someone who enjoys a fresh, distinctive home fragrance, which is not overpowering. La Bougie ensure their fragrance throw fills the room, and it really does give a beautiful smell throughout the home when lighting.

La Bougie Mission Fig Candle

Their renowned fragrance, for a reason, also available as a diffuser. A great alternative for someone who prefers a different fragrance profile. If you know they enjoy a beautifully scented home, a quality candle is an easy gift that feels thoughtful without being overly personal.

For the Athlete

For the runner, gym-goer or person who is always fitting a workout into their week, practical gifts can be just as welcome as the fun ones.

Ground Nollaig: The Athlete Gift Set

A useful option for someone who enjoys recovery and self-care after training. The magnesium spray makes it relevant for an active person who likes incorporating massage or topical products into their post-exercise routine.

A quick pharmacist’s note: topical magnesium products are popular, but evidence that magnesium sprays meaningfully replenish the body’s magnesium levels or prevent cramps is limited. I’d think of this as a self-care gift rather than a replacement for good nutrition, hydration or appropriate recovery.

For Pregnancy and New Mum

For an expectant mum or someone who has recently had a baby, I’d lean towards thoughtful comfort, practical treats and gifts that make a little time for herself easier to find.

SKN TO SKN The Glow Duo Set

A lovely skincare gift for an expectant mum or new mum who enjoys a little glow. The set comes in two tint options - Light Tint and Deep Tint - so you can choose the one that best suits her complexion. It’s a thoughtful way to give someone a day-and-night skincare duo while keeping her routine simple and pregnancy-safe while also containing active ingredients that will help her glow and support her skin goals.

A gift voucher is another great choice here, allowing the recipient to choose what she genuinely needs when she’s ready, including a relaxing self-care treatment in our Millie’s Naas Clinic, including Advanced Skincare Treatments, Holistic Therapies and Massage, and more. See our treatment menu Here.

For the Little Ones

Gifts for children can be fun and practical at the same time. These picks are geared towards bath time, bedtime and making haircare a little easier. Parents will appreciate these too!

For Bedtime: Childs Farm Sweet Dreams Lavender 3-Piece Sleep Gift Set

A lovely present for a family who enjoys a bedtime bath or a little evening routine. It makes bath time feel more like a treat, particularly for a child who enjoys having their own little products. How cute!

For a Little Pamper Moment: Ground Storytime Massage

A thoughtful option for toddlers around ages two to four, particularly for families who enjoy a gentle bedtime wind-down. Keep any massage light and child-led, and check the product’s age guidance and ingredients before use. Be mindful of sensitive skin here and always keep the oil out of reach of children – only to be used by the parents themselves.

For Little Hair: Luna Professional Haircare The Little Locks Edit

A fun option for a child who is starting to enjoy having their own haircare products. It can make brushing and getting ready feel a little more grown-up - and hopefully a little less of a battle.

Little Gifts That Fit in a Stocking

Sometimes the smaller gifts are the ones people use most. These are handy options for beauty lovers, self-care fans or anyone who appreciates a little extra treat.

Tisserand Essential Oil Roll-On

I love these roll-on essential oils and think they are an ideal Kris Kindle gift, whether you know the person well, or not. They are a lovely little compact gift for someone who enjoys aromatherapy-inspired products and carrying small self-care items in their bag.

Patchology Mistletoes

A fun seasonal treat for someone who enjoys a little at-home pampering. A small beauty gift can be a nice way to add something playful to a stocking without overcomplicating things.

The Gift for Someone Who Has Everything

Millie’s Gift Voucher

And finally, the gift voucher - for the person who is genuinely impossible to buy for, or the one who already seems to have everything.

It lets them choose something they really want, whether that’s skincare, fragrance, haircare, wellness or even a treatment in our Naas Clinic – with everything from our Head Spa to Massage, to Advanced Skincare Treatments, there is ample choice with a gift card. No guessing their shade, scent or preferred routine required!

My Final Tip

When choosing beauty and wellness gifts, think about the person rather than the trend. Buying thoughtfully over buying more is always best. Think about the person and what they would really appreciate, and maybe not think of buying for themselves. A lovely moisturiser for someone with dry skin, a fragrance they’ll genuinely enjoy, or a haircare set that suits their needs can be much more thoughtful than the most talked-about product of the moment, if it’s not something they’re interested in.

And remember, more skincare isn’t always better. If you’re buying for someone with sensitive or acne-prone skin, keeping things simple is often a good starting point, particularly with teens who may wish to try anything that is trending!

Whatever you’re shopping for this December, I hope this guide helps you find something they’ll genuinely love - and takes a little of the guesswork out of Christmas gifting.
